Green Valley Racer makes his Formula 4 debut
Kane in year 12 put on a fantastic display in Malaysia where he was racing alongside the Formula 1 Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit. Part of the F1 weekend, includes the F4 series where young drivers prove their talents as a way to progress towards the heights of Formula 1. St Andrews' very own Kane Shepherd is one such young driver, trying to make his way through the ranks. Fifteen or so students and staff from school had the privilege of watching Kane up close, with a view from above the pit lane!
The Saturday schedule saw two F4 events being organised back-to-back due to a broken drain incident during F1's free practice session. This led to a miscalculation by the race organiser’s as to the amount of fuel the cars would require for both races. So while Race 1 concluded without any issue, spectators were in disbelief when the cars stopped towards the end of Race 2, due to the lack of fuel. The first driver ran out of fuel on Lap 5, while the four other racers followed suit on Lap 6 with more cars coming to halt on different sections of the track. Three more ran out of fuel on Lap 7, which prompted the safety car. On the final lap, just one driver was left in the running- Kane! As he was making his way to the chequered flag, he too ran out of fuel by the exit of Turn 2. The safety car turned out to be the only vehicle to actually take the chequered flag.
The final finishing position for each driver comes from an average taking across the 5 races they compete in over the weekend. Once everything had been calculated, Kane’s overall final position was 2nd! For his first proper race in the series, this was better than anybody could have expected. Formula 1 is calling! #GOteamGV #ProudtobeGV
