Motivated St Andrews’ Students Explore Space

Highly motivated year 5 students focused on their task of being PYP inquirers during their recent trip to ‘The Space Inspirium’. Porsche said “I feel different after the trip because I got to try on astronaut gloves and complete a simple task whilst wearing them - I never realised how difficult working in space must be”. Luke said “I really enjoyed watching the 3D journey into space - it was amazing to see the planets and stars so close up”. Noah said “I am more knowledgeable about space after the trip. I have a better knowledge of the planets and how our solar system work”.
This trip linked with their central idea: Planet Earth is affected by cycles and movement within our solar system. They researched areas of interest to them using the 5 essential elements of the PYP (Knowledge, Concepts, Skills, Attitudes and Action) to guide their inquiries. They were also asked to apply our focus Learner Profiles to their inquiries at the Museum (Knowledgeable, Inquirer and Thinker). Students were involved in: research, observation, discussions, listening, sketching, recording and experimenting with different materials during the trip.
