St Andrews’ students win an award for honouring His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, and prompted an emotional one-minute silence in the closing ceremony of the Tournament of the Minds competition.

Congratulations to the St. Andrews’ Tournament of the Minds team who received a special award at the recent finals held in Australia. For their dedication and commitment, they received the 'Spirit of TOM' award. In their 'lockdown' maths and engineering challenge students received the top score available and judges said "Not only was your device well thought out and ingenious, you all worked well together to create a flawless and well- rehearsed performance." For the spontaneous challenge, students were asked to freeze a moment in time and explain their reasoning. Our students decided to freeze the time before His Majesty the King passed away and went on to explain how and why this could help the people of Thailand. In response to the teams' spontaneous challenge, judges were so moved by their "poignant choice of context and excellent presentation of their explanations" that they decided to honour the passing of the King by holding a one-minute silence during the closing ceremony of the tournament. Over 2000 Australian citizens took part in the silence and our students were recognised for their love and commitment to their King, people and country.
