Pastoral Care & Wellbeing

The emotional health and wellbeing of every student is of the utmost importance. Children learn best when they are happy and healthy. Our pastoral care system is designed to make sure that children feel safe and supported at school so that they can do exactly that.

Tutor time:

In the Secondary School, all students have a 20 minute homeroom session each morning. During this time, as well as taking attendance, the homeroom tutor spends time with their group helping to ensure that they are happy, healthy and fully prepared for the day.

PSHE as part of the curriculum:

Each week students in Years 7 – 11 have a Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) lesson. Here they learn about dealing with the pressures associated with being teenagers. PSHE lessons also provide the ideal opportunity for students to ask important questions about growing up and to also listen to the input of others experiencing the same pressures. PSHE lessons also educate students about online safety, diversity, drug and sex education.

Mental Health First Aiders:

Over 14 members of the school’s teaching and support staff are qualified Mental health First Aiders. This means that they are trained to identify the signs of poor mental health and are able to offer support and guidance to those who need it. Students are aware who they can talk to, and have established a ‘circle of trust’ with relative members of staff where needed.

The school also offers regular opportunities to parents and students to receive Mental Health First Aid training too, all as part of ensuring that our school community is a happy and safe place to be.

The Wellbeing Award for Schools:

We are very proud of the way we care for our students and for each other. During February 2022, St Andrews Green Valley achieved the internationally-recognized Wellbeing Award for Schools – the first school on Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard to be recognised with this accolade. This award measures schools against a national standard for positive mental health and emotional wellbeing.

‘Staff help develop students’ life skills through both the rich curriculum and the school’s wider offer. As a result, students feel they are part of a community where everyone’s differences are celebrated.’

School counsellors:

The school employs a full-time, fully accredited counsellor who supports students of all ages. The counsellor works alongside the Designated Safeguarding Lead to refer students who may benefit from counselling. All sessions are free of charge.

Opportunities for all:

All secondary students also attend a weekly assembly which focuses on recognising student achievement as well as informing students about what is happening at school in the near future. On a Thursday afternoon, students participate in two 50 minute activity sessions of their own choice. Activity options are wide and varied and usually include drama, sport, cultural and artistic options.

As a School, it is essential that we develop every aspect of a child. Exam results are important, however ensuring that a child is happy and enjoying learning is more important as a happy child will work harder and therefore learn more quickly. In addition to learning through traditional subject lessons, students are given the opportunity to:

  •       take part in a variety of sports;
  •       learn a musical instrument;
  •       be part of a drama production;
  •       develop their public speaking ability;
  •       take on responsibility through student leadership roles;
  •       explore how the world works through Model United Nations
  •       develop a culture of “giving is better than receiving” through our community service programme.
