Pierre Walker: From Green Valley to ICL, MIT and Caltech

Pierre Walker graduated from St. Andrews Green Valley in 2017. Since then, his academic path has taken our international school alumni to some of the most prestigious institutions in the world, from Imperial College London, MIT, and now to a PhD at Caltech.

But this journey didn’t begin with rankings or ambition. It started with two subjects he fell in love with at Green Valley: physics and chemistry.

How Pierre Discovered His Interests?

“I knew from the classes I did here with Mr Frost and Mr Forbes that I had a real passion for physics and chemistry,” Pierre explains. “Talking with my parents and teachers, they all motivated me to consider engineering. I loved chemistry, so chemical engineering seemed the right fit.”

Pierre credits the IB programme at Green Valley with giving him both a rigorous academic foundation and the independence to handle university-level research and planning.

How St. Andrew Green Valley’s Teachers Helped Him Achieve?

“You have to do a lot of the planning yourself, but the teachers are there to support you and make sure you stay on track. That balance prepared me really well for university.”

But it wasn’t just the science faculty that left a mark. Pierre also points to his English and drama teachers as unexpectedly critical influences, helping him grow into a confident communicator, it’s a skill that’s now central to his success as part of our international school alumni, especially when presenting at global conferences during his PhD.

“There aren’t many strong public speakers in STEM. Having that drama experience made a big difference. Mr. Herman really encouraged me to stick with it — and I’m so grateful I did.”

Pierre’s research now contributes to international scientific communities. One software package he developed during his undergraduate studies has become a core tool used by labs around the world.

More Than Academics: The Green Valley Experience

What Pierre’s story reflects and what so many of our St. Andrews International School alumni echo is that Green Valley isn’t just a place to study. It’s a community where students are known, encouraged, and inspired to be more.

Through small class sizes and strong student-teacher relationships, we foster both academic growth and personal confidence. Students are given the space to lead, to try, and to evolve.

From the Forest School programme to Model United Nations, eco-leadership, and performing arts, our learners gain much more than a diploma. We ensure our international school alumni leave with a sense of self, a set of global values, and the practical readiness to step into the next chapter wherever it may lead.
