What Should Parents Look for in Early Years and Primary School?

Starting a new school or movi  ng into Primary brings new routines, new ways of learning and growing independence. At this stage, how children settle in, how well their teachers know them and how learning develops as they grow all matter.

Perhaps your family is moving to a new area or country. Perhaps your child is moving from Early Years into Primary, or you are looking for a school that better suits their needs. Whatever brings the change, choosing a new school means thinking about more than the curriculum or facilities.

For younger children, the people, routines and learning environment around them are an important part of starting somewhere new. The key question is not simply whether your child can join a new school, but how the school will help them feel ready to learn.

The Early Years: Building the Foundation for Your Child’s Future

When choosing an Early Years or Primary school, it is easy to focus on the visible details: classrooms, facilities, activities and the curriculum. But one of the most important questions is how the school will support your child as they learn, adapt and grow.

Can your child build trusting relationships with teachers? Will they have opportunities to ask questions, explore ideas and discover what interests them? As they grow older, will they gradually develop the confidence and independence to take greater responsibility for their learning?

These questions matter whether your child is starting school for the first time or moving from another school.

A Good Start Begins with Feeling Comfortable

In Early Years, children learn through play, exploration and hands-on experiences. We combine the Early Years Foundation Stage with the IB Primary Years Programme, giving children time to explore ideas, ask questions and try things for themselves.

As children move into Primary, learning gradually becomes more structured. The IB Primary Years Programme continues alongside the British curriculum as children develop their knowledge and skills across different subjects.

Children also take on more responsibility as they grow. For younger children, this might mean following a familiar routine, making a simple choice or asking for help. In Primary, they begin to make more decisions and take greater responsibility for their learning.

Outdoor Learning at Green Valley

Beyond the Classroom

Our green campus gives children plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors as part of their school day. Through Forest School and other outdoor learning experiences, children can explore and learn in a different environment alongside their classroom learning.

As they move through Primary, children also experience specialist subjects and can take part in co-curricular activities. These become another part of school life where children can try different things and discover interests they may want to continue.

For parents, these experiences offer another consideration when choosing a school: will their child have opportunities to explore, participate and develop interests alongside their academic learning?

These are questions best discussed directly with the school.
